Every Summer I Was Convinced We Were About to Go Out of Business

Okay, maybe that's a little dramatic.

But if you're a business owner, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

Every year around late May or early June, I'd start noticing things getting a little quieter.

A few fewer emails.

A few fewer inquiries.

Clients taking longer to respond because they're traveling, wrapping up the school year, or mentally checking out for summer.

And without fail, the little voice in my head would show up:

"What if this is the year things really slow down?"

"What if nobody calls?"

"What if we've somehow forgotten how to run a business?"

Logically, I knew it wasn't true.

Idea Enablers has been around for over 15 years. We've worked with amazing clients. We've weathered recessions, pandemics, and every economic prediction imaginable.

But logic and business-owner anxiety don't always occupy the same room.

So every summer, I'd find myself doing what many business owners do:

Panic marketing.

Posting more.

Tweaking the website.

Talking about marketing.

Thinking about marketing.

Wondering if we should be doing something different.

Basically, a lot of activity that made me feel productive without actually creating new opportunities.

What Changed This Year

This year, we decided to do something different.

Back in January, we made a commitment to consistently work on our pipeline before we needed it.

Not when things got slow.

Not when we felt nervous.

Not when revenue dipped.

Before.

We started reaching out to people we'd lost touch with.

Scheduling coffee meetings.

Following up with old clients.

Reconnecting with referral partners.

Attending networking events.

Making introductions.

Checking in with people simply because we wanted to know how they were doing.

Nothing revolutionary.

Nothing fancy.

Just consistent outreach.

And here's what surprised me:

I actually started enjoying it.

For years, I treated outreach like a necessary evil.

Something I knew I should do but always found a reason to postpone.

I told myself I was too busy.

Too introverted.

Too focused on client work.

Too uncomfortable.

But once it became a habit instead of an emergency response, it felt completely different.

Instead of asking people for something, I was building relationships.

Instead of chasing business, I was creating conversations.

Instead of waiting for opportunities, I was creating them.

The Real Lesson

The biggest shift wasn't in our pipeline.

It was in my mindset.

For the first time in a long time, summer arrived and I wasn't worried.

Not because we had some magical forecasting system.

Not because every month was guaranteed.

Not because we suddenly became immune to economic uncertainty.

I felt calmer because I knew we'd been doing the work.

We weren't relying solely on referrals.

We weren't hoping people would remember us.

We weren't waiting until things got quiet to start marketing.

We had already planted seeds.

And that's the thing most people don't realize:

The businesses that stay busy through summer usually don't start their outreach in summer.

They started months earlier.

If Summer Makes You Nervous, Start Here

You don't need a complicated marketing plan.

You don't need to spend thousands on advertising.

You don't need to post seven times a day.

Start with a few simple actions:

  • Reach out to a past client.

  • Schedule a coffee meeting.

  • Reconnect with a referral partner.

  • Follow up on an old opportunity.

  • Introduce two people who could help each other.

  • Share a client success story.

Small actions create momentum.

Momentum creates opportunities.

And opportunities create confidence.

One More Thing

If you're anything like me, you'll probably still have moments where you wonder whether business is about to fall off a cliff.

I think that's just part of being an entrepreneur.

But I've learned that confidence doesn't come from certainty.

It comes from knowing you're doing the right things consistently.

And that feels a whole lot better than panic marketing.
